Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a true American Holiday. It was originally known as Decoration Day because people would “decorate” the graves of the fallen soldiers after the civil war.

After World War I the holiday was expanded to include all American casualties of any war or military action.

The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause at 3:00 local time for one minute of silence on Memorial Day to remember all of the sacrifices that were made so that we can enjoy our freedom.

Traditions for Memorial Day Weekend

1. Flying the American flag at half-mast – out of respect and remembrance of the fallen.
2. Attending a speech or concert – Almost every community will have some sort of event that will bring people together to honor the country in some way.
3. Watching the race – The Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 are both held on Memorial Day.
4. Having a cookout – This is a favorite American past-time and Memorial Day typically signals the beginning of summer.
5. Going to the lake – Usually the first nice weather of the season and perfect for putting the boat in the water.
