Herbert Construction Welcomes New Customers

2014 has been a good year for our company, and we expect it to get better and better with time.  The residential building market appears to be coming back, albeit slowly, from The Great Recession.  As more homebuilders pick up new projects, they are choosing to use our company for their basement foundations.

Three of those homebuilders are featured here.  We are happy to welcome them to our great group of builder clients, and we thank them for their business.  It is a pleasure to work with each of them.

Commercial Interiors, Inc./TCP Investments

Marvin Spears has been a homebuilder for 30 years.  Twelve years ago, he partnered with Tim Parker of TCP Investments, LLC.  Together they survived the real estate and construction downturn, and today are building beautiful semi-custom and custom homes. We had the pleasure of constructing the basement of a gorgeous home they are building in the Eagles Crest subdivision in Paulding County.  

“I had worked with another poured wall contactor for quite some time,” said Marvin, “and I just wasn’t getting good response from them.  Tim was referred to your company and I made a phone call.”

“Herbert Construction was extremely efficient in everything we did together.  When David Summey, your Project Superintendent, came out to meet me at the job, we just clicked!  It was as if we each knew what the other was going to say.”

Cooper Homes

John Cooper (pictured right) has been an Atlanta area home builder for more than thirty years.  He is active with the Greater Atlanta Homebuilders Association, and was the proud recipient of the 2012 OBIE Builder of the Year Award.  This prestigious award is given to builders who are not only active in the housing industry, but who make significant contributions to their communities through charitable service. 

While John was familiar with Herbert Construction, he hadn’t used us before.  As a subscriber to this newsletter, he was familiar with our company.  However, when he read a particular article in the newsletter, he learned that he and Doug Herbert shared a similar love for the book Atlas Shrugged.  That prompted him to call our company. 

We constructed a basement for a custom home that John’s company built in North Georgia earlier this year.  And so, a beautiful relationship was born!

“Herbert Construction is top notch” said John.  “We were particularly impressed with your layout team.  Their precision insured that the next step of the project went off without a hitch.”  John’s son Thomas Cooper (pictured left) is the Vice President of Cooper Homes.  He agreed with his father.  “Working with Herbert Construction was a good experience.  We are definitely looking forward to working with you on future projects.”

 

BeQuin Homes

Brad Quin, the owner of BeQuin Homes has many years of experience building custom homes in North Georgia.  He was one of several select builders involved in the Governors Town Club Project, in Acworth.

Brad was referred to Herbert Construction, and this year we worked together on two different projects. The first was a very complicated job in Blue Ridge, and the second is a beautiful custom home that Brad is building in Cobb County.

“My experience with Herbert Construction was very positive,” said Brad.  “The first time I worked with them, I needed to build a very unique wall that was up against a crawlspace.  They were very knowledgeable, Doug Herbert came out and personally surveyed the project with me.  The crews who did the work were good, and I thought they did an awesome job.”

“The project I’m working on now was definitely not an easy foundation.  There are lots of variations in wall heights and the project was very technical.  I would be surprised if Herbert Construction did not win an award with this basement due to the complexity of the project.” “In short, said Brad, working with Herbert Construction has been a very positive experience.”

Windsong Properties has been a great customer of Herbert Construction since 2011, and since the beginning of that relationship, we’ve constructed nearly 40 of their foundations. This past Summer, Herbert Construction was awarded a Project of the Year award by the Concrete Foundations Association of North America (CFA).  This award was for a basement we built for Windsong for a home located in the Seven Hills subdivision in Cherokee County.

This home is tucked into a very steep hill and while the home is not overly large, it was complex to build. The steep slope of the lot required 32 different wall types. 

With a multitude of steps in the excavated grade and the steep drop-off of the site, many wall forms had to be hand-carried up several plateaus to get them back into the form baskets. Our crews definitely showed off their skills with this project!

To show our appreciation for winning the award, Herbert Construction presented a similar award to Windsong Properties.

Halloween Fun!

Once again, Doug dressed up in his gorilla costume and got in the cage to hand out candy on Halloween.  Once the kids have gotten their candy, the gorilla breaks out of the cage and chases the frightened kids into the cul-de-sac.

Jobs Create Jobs

Construction – like most things – is location specific.  What happens in your own local market is much more important and impactful on your business than what happens in other parts of the country.

The rest of the country could be experiencing problems, but if your market is doing fine, then you’ll be fine, too.

For example, while the rest of the country fell apart during the Great Recession, Texas experienced only modest declines in their economy.  Texans kept building and growing within their local markets.  They didn’t experience the hardships that the rest of us went through. 

Strong markets are defined by job growth and asset appreciation.  For those of us in construction, our fortunes are much more dependent upon local job growth and favorable economic conditions.  These affect our businesses much more than what the Dow is doing or whether or not Detroit is bankrupt.

When new jobs are created, there is a massive trickle-down effect throughout the area in the form of job creation to house and then support those new jobs. 

The good news is that while the Nation’s economy and world economy are on shaky ground, Metro Atlanta has some projects that are sure to create jobs and have positive effects on the local economy – and our construction industry.

Here are a few of those projects and initiatives:

State Farm Hub – This new Dunwoody complex will add 2,500 jobs in the next few years.

Falcons Stadium and Braves Stadium – According to Brailsford & Dunlavey, the Braves Stadium alone will provide 4,014 new jobs and generate $4 million in tax revenue each year.

Multiple Apartment Towers – These new buildings in Midtown and Buckhead will provide construction jobs, while the new tenants will improve the economy within those sub-markets.

LakePoint Sports Complex – Located on more than 1,200 acres in Bartow County, this project will be one of the largest amateur sports complexes in the world.  It will produce approx. 2,400 jobs.

Film Industry – Feature films and television productions in Georgia generated an economic impact of $5.1 billion during Fiscal Year 2013.  The industry is responsible for more than 77,900 jobs and $3.8 billion in total wages in Georgia.  Much of that activity is located on the South side of Atlanta.

Dredging of the Savannah River – Alright, I know this isn’t local.  However, it will have a huge impact on Georgia’s – and Atlanta’s – economy.  One expert, quoted in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, said that it will have as big an impact on Georgia as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Int’l. Airport.

Cabela’s Store – While this new 100,000-square-foot store in Acworth will only employ 200 full- and part-time workers, I had to include it because who doesn’t get excited about wild animal mounts, a gun library and boat shop!?!

my kids and I toured the USS Cod, an 

awesome WWII submarine.

There are many things that point to job creation, construction activity and positive momentum for Metro Atlanta.  I wish I could say the same thing about the direction the federal government is taking us, but that’s a subject for another time.
