Betting on Atlanta

| When I decided to run my first marathon a couple of years ago, I read somewhere that only 25% of all people that complete the 26.2 mile race do so in less than four hours. I made my mind up at that moment to be one of those in the top 25%. I’m happy to say that I finished the Miami Marathon this past February in 3 hours and 43 minutes. |
This is shaping up to be an interesting year for Metro Atlanta as well as the nation. People are often skittish during an election year. Some people hold off on major purchases until after the election, while others move forward through the uncertainty. We’ll see how this year plays out.
For many of us, the thought of Hillary winning the Presidential election is unbearable. Nearly half of republican voters feel only slightly less afraid of Trump being elected to the top post on the planet. With potential Supreme Court appointments, the future of Obamacare, geopolitical instability, and economic troubles in China and elsewhere, this is shaping up to be the most important election of our time.
In spite of the gloomy issues I just mentioned, we at Herbert Construction Co. are bullish on Metro Atlanta. Atlanta continues to add new jobs as it attracts great companies to the area. New job creation is the driver of any free-market economy. Residential and commercial construction follow quickly behind.
Herbert Construction Co. is betting on Atlanta’s future. We recently invested in a new Robotic Total Station layout instrument to layout our foundations with even higher efficiency and accuracy. We also purchased a concrete pump truck and hired the best operator in the South to run it (see page 3 for more info). This will improve our scheduling and responsiveness. And, our system for hiring and training new laborers is constantly being refined.
We also continue to invest our time and money educating ourselves on the latest codes, industry changes, and concrete contractor best practices. For example, I am the Treasurer on the Board of Directors for the Concrete Foundations Association. And, through our activity within the American Concrete Institute, Barry Herbert and I are helping to shape future building codes.
Part of that education and networking with our peers takes place annually at the World of Concrete convention in Las Vegas. You can read more about the largest annual gathering of concrete contractors in the world on page 2.
Our company is taking the necessary steps to continue moving forward. To be the most valuable subcontractor to our existing clients, and to add more new clients throughout this coming year.
Goals for the Year
We are well into the third month of the year already. In a week or so, we will be a quarter of the way through 2016. If you set goals at the beginning of the year for yourself and your business, you should be almost 25% along the path of attaining your goals. I am a little behind on some goals that I set, and on track with others. It’s not too late to set goals for what you want out of this year.
